2. American Staffordshire Terrier

History and origins:

It easy to assume that the Staffordshire Terrier was originally bred in Staffordshire, England when in fact it was first bred in Birmingham, West Midlands in the US. It was only later that these dogs were bred in Staffordshire, England. Nevertheless, these Pit bull breed’s ancestors are from England. The English Bulldog was cross-bred with another dog (there is the contention of opinion as to whether dogs like the Black and Tan Terrier, Fox Terrier or White English Terrier was used in the breeding).

In the US, the dog was very popular with people, but after World War 2 its popularity slightly declined.

Characteristics:

This Pit bull breed is stubborn by nature, but it does show a positive response to owners who can establish and enforce rules confidently about its behavior. Expect a loyal, dependable and good-natured dog who considers companionship to be necessary. Its reaction to strangers may vary from instinctual guarding, reserve politeness or exuberant face-kissing.

Due to its dogfighting ancestry, this Pit bull breed will not respond kindly to assertive dogs and will engage the offender if confronted. It can live peacefully with other pets though there is a risk that it will revert to its animal prey instincts.

Its body is ha a coat of stiff, thick glossy hair and a stocky, muscular body that is extremely strong for it size. It’s broad and powerful head has a very strong jaw with a muzzle that is medium in length. Ears can be cropped or otherwise. The tail is undocked and short tapering to a point.

An American Staffordshire Terrier’s size is 18-19 inches at the shoulders for males and 17-18 inches at the shoulders for females.

Health problems:

This Pit bull breed tends to inherit disorders such as:

Congenital heart disease
Elbow dysplasia
Hip dysplasia
Luxating patella
Thyroid dysfunction
Cerebellar ataxia

Skin allergies, autoimmune diseases, and urinary tract infection are other diseases infecting this dog. Older dogs can suffer from osteoarthritis and spondylosis.

Grooming:

Brush its coat on a regular basis using a firm bristle brush, and then bathe using dry shampoo if needed. The dog is an average shedder and to make its coat gleam use a piece of chamois and toweling.

Litter size:

1 or 5 to 9 puppies

Exercise routine:

Give daily exercise to the dog, but do it in a vigorous manner. Improper exercise leads to overweight and laziness for the dog.
