Sometimes in life, you just need a little break to give help where it’s needed, in this case, two things needed to happen, for these sick and abandoned dogs to be noticed…
The first of these things was an alarm, there was a renovation going on to a house in Little Haiti, Miami, one workman by accident set off the house alarm.
As the house alarm was sounding the second thing happened, this American bulldog called Frances got up on the landing of the next house along, one of the builders, Claire Morera, thankfully saw her!
Claire went to check the dog, she looked in a terrible state and of course abandoned, she hadn’t been eating properly either and was really thin!
The poor girl was covered in ticks and had a really bad infection in both eyes too, being tied up to the landing with a heavy-duty chain she could get out of her predicament either!
Claire took some photos of Frances and put them on to her Facebook, she tagged the local dog rescue called ‘100+ Abandoned dogs of Everglades Florida’, that’s how a volunteer called Jan Stenger, came into the situation.
“We were actually on a different rescue that morning, but I looked up Frances’ location on my phone and we were 9 miles away from her …[Other volunteers] stayed behind to try to catch that other dog, and then we took off to go get Frances.”
Jan, who has herself rescued dogs around Miami over the past four years, described the dog’s state as “horrific”.
“I always said that one of our crew members, Carol, and I are strongest-minded …We don’t break easily, but we were both a mess on that rescue. That truly was the worst thing I had ever seen in my life. I get choked up just thinking about it.”
She talked to local residents and realized that the dog’s owners had sadly passed away, the dog had just been left there…
“People knew she was left there, and she obviously wasn’t being fed appropriately, if at all”
They reckon from the state she was in that she had been there for two weeks or more, the poor girl.
They struggled to remove the chain from her neck so they carried her with it still attached…
“It took us a while to get the chain off her when we got her back to the animal hospital because we didn’t have bolt cutters …When we finally did get the chain off of her, that was the first time she wagged her tail.”
Her biggest and most debilitating condition was her eyes, so infected that they couldn’t save them, they were both gone too far, then after that the ticks…
“She had thousands of ticks on her …She stayed in the bathtub for five hours the first night and three hours the next morning getting ticks taken off of her body.”
Frances wasn’t in too bad shape after they, thankfully, she had not got any diseases from the ticks, she needed feeding up and to gain her strength again.
Jan fostered Frances, but it soon became permanent, how adorable they are…
“Never in a million years did I think we would keep her …I’ve always had boy dogs and I’ve always had Labs and golden’s. But we knew pretty quickly that she wasn’t going to go anywhere.”
Now Frances smiles every minute of the day, she really could not be happier.
“She’s a happy girl …The minute I walk in the door, I hear her tail thumping on the couch. She loves people. And as terrible as people were to her, she has forgiven us.”
“She’s a good snuggle …She’ll take naps lying on top of me, and at night she curls up in a ball next to me. She always has to be touching me.”
Jan really wouldn’t know what to do without her Frances now, and we think that Frances feels the sale too.
