Mama Dog Was Dumped At Gas Station, Then The Perfect Person Stopped To Fill Her Tank

Shannon Ackerman, an experienced dog rescuer, pulled into a gas station in Missouri City, Texas. Her plan was simple: To fill up her tank. She did NOT expect what happened next.

Ackerman had just come from rescuing a Husky and her two puppies that were trapped inside a drain pipe. She was on her way home when her gas light came on.

Ackerman got out of her car and walked over to the pump. Suddenly, she felt something on her leg.

“As soon as I started pumping gas, I felt something lick me on the back of my knee, which scared me,” Ackerman told The Dodo. “When I looked down, this sweet, sad German shepherd, who appeared to have just had a litter, was looking up at me with a look on her face like, ‘Can you please help me?’”

Ackerman went over to talk to the attendant. He said that he saw someone dump the dog there and then speed off before he could stop them.

The dog, whom they later name Mercy, was whimpering and trying to get inside Ackerman’s car. The only problem was that her car was filled to the brim with dog supplies AND three other dogs. There was no way she could fit Mercy as well. But how could she leave her there?

Ackerman asked the attendant to keep a close eye on Mercy and drove as fast as she could to where she had just come from, where another rescuer, Whitney Hartman was still on the scene.

“She told me there was a German shepherd mom in the [gas station] parking lot, whining and trying to get into her car,” Hartman said. “Of course, I couldn’t leave her there, so I drove over.”

Hartman drove over– Mercy was delighted to see her. She hopped right into Hartman’s car. Hartman then drove Mercy to her house to get a good meal into her and a good night sleep. The next morning, Mercy was brought over to a foster home, a place that specializes in German Shepherd rescues called Sauver Des Chiens.

“She is doing well,” Courtney Manske, communications director for Sauver Des Chiens, told The Dodo. “She’s a love and a very sweet dog. But she’s still … looking for her puppies. She’s so confused.”

The rescue group is doing all they can to try to find Mercy’s puppies so they can be reunited.

“We are still actively searching for her puppies and any information that might lead us to them,” Manske said. “We’re scouring Craigslist and Facebook … looking for whoever might be rehoming them.”
