As a dog lover — it’s hard to fathom why someone wouldn’t want to adopt a dog like Bear. Bear is the star of this story, and his journey has been anything but easy. For some strange reason — Bear was struggling to find a forever home.
The Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) was so confused as to why Bear was passed by time and time again. He was sweet, gentle, and an absolute joy to be around. He was truly a dream family member.
But for whatever reason — Bear had been at the shelter for almost 3 years, and they could not find him a family. Bear had been found as a stray in Flint, Michigan and has been at the shelter ever since.
“He was about 7 months old and very emaciated,” Kelley LaBonty, director of DAWG, said. “He stayed in foster care for a while, but then the foster had family who moved in, and they couldn’t keep him anymore.”
LaBonty was saddened by the number of families who would show interest but then back out at the last minute. She just couldn’t understand it — Bear was the epitome of a dream dog.
Being in a shelter is never fun for dogs. They are usually pent up in a kennel without a warm home or a proper, soft bed to sleep on.
They don’t get love and affection from someone who truly cares about them.
It’s easy for dogs to become depressed in these types of situations — they are capable of feeling emotions that many humans can’t feel.
The time in the shelter was taking its toll on Bear. He would see all the other dogs come and go.
When LaBonty started seeing how sad Bear was becoming when no one would adopt him — she took to social media. She took a picture of Bear, and the post immediately went viral.
“It went viral because it was a very sad picture,” she said. “He is depressed in the kennel, as most dogs get, especially after two years of being in a kennel […] Mostly he just lays on his bed with his head down.”
Once the photo started circulating, the shelter was crossing their fingers that someone would adopt Bear. The only requirement was that he needed to be the only pet in the house.
After circulating the world, Bear’s picture finally caught the attention of a couple who immediately fell in love with the sweet dog. In late June, Bear was finally able to go to a home and stay there…forever!
The couple says that they promise to spoil Bear to no end. DAWG took to Facebook to share their excitement!
“The moment we have all been waiting for. It looks like Bear has left the dawghous after 2.5 long years in a kennel.
He has a huge yard to run and will be spoiled by his new mom and dad. He even has a trainer lined up who is donating his services to help Bear and his family adjust.
Tears from all who have loved and cared for Bear all this time. Thank you for giving him the chance he needs.”
SHARE Bear’s story on Facebook and encourage people to adopt, not shop! And take a chance on senior dogs — they have so much love to give.
